Bitcoin Cash upgrade timeline published by ABC developers

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) enthusiasts and investors, mark your calendars. Most are probably aware already of the stress test coming in September, but some activity in November could prove to be even more exciting. A hard fork is scheduled for that month, and the Bitcoin ABC development team has released a timeline of activity that will occur in the lead up to the upgrade.

In an appropriately titled ‘November 15 Upgrade Timeline’ paper, the developers have outlined the hard fork preparations in order to help ensure everything goes well during the upgrade. They want to get as much information out there in advance so that full node participants and miners can organize themselves with as much time as possible.

Specific additions to the BCH network relating to the hard fork have yet to be released. However, the developers revealed that they have two main goals to accomplish before the upgrade. The first goal will take place on August 15, and will include a codebase upgrade to counter risks inherent to protocol upgrades. The ABC team said in the published timeline that they want to give players as much time as possible to review code changes, stating, “To accommodate that, Bitcoin ABC is targeting August 15th as its code completion date — Protocol changes past this date will be recommended for next year’s May hard fork.”

Once the code is cleaned up, testnet trials will begin. If everything goes well, the official updated version of the code, release 0.18, will be released on October 15. The developers explained, “Barring the discovery of any major issues after two months of testnet testing and debugging, Bitcoin ABC will launch the official release for version 0.18,” the timeline details…This will give node operators approximately 30 days to upgrade in time for the hard fork.”

Some features are currently being discussed for inclusion in the upgrade, while others will be put on the back burner until the next upgrade in May of next year. According to developers, they are currently considering and testing “canonical transaction ordering, OP_Datasigverify and variants, tokenization, UTXO commitments, and reintroducing other previously removed OP_Codes.”

It’s also possible to see a few more features added this November or next May, but the final decision still has not been made. Some of these features include a revised DAA, more efficient block announcements using Graphene and the creation of an instrument to prevent double spending. Once the codebase is launched, the upcoming features will certainly become evident. As of now, there are no plans to increase the size of the blocks and an increase isn’t very likely for the upcoming hard fork.

Note: Tokens on the Bitcoin Core (segwit) Chain are Referred to as BTC coins. Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is today the only Bitcoin implementation that follows Satoshi Nakamoto’s original whitepaper for Peer to Peer Electronic Cash. Bitcoin BCH is the only major public blockchain that maintains the original vision for Bitcoin as fast, frictionless, electronic cash.
